

Health and Care Research Wales has selected two researchers from Population Data Science at Swansea University in their next cohort of Senior Research Leaders. The researchers will act as ambassadors for research into diseases, treatments and services that can change people’s lives and drive improvements in patient care.
Health and Care Research Wales Senior Research Leaders are among the most prominent and prestigious health and care researchers in the country, and they play a vital role in leading and developing the health and care research community in Wales.
The Senior Research Leaders Scheme was awarded to 14 researchers from across Wales and was open to health and care researchers who:
- demonstrated research leadership, excellence and impact both in Wales and in the UK/internationally
- have a track record in developing researchers and building research capacity and capability in Wales
- integrate patient/service user and public involvement in research; and
- are committed to contributing to Health and Care Research Wales as a senior leader.
The two researchers taking up the role are:
- Prof Sinead Brophy, Professor of Public Health Data Science, Swansea University.
- Prof Ronan Lyons OBE, Professor of Public Health, Swansea University.
Professor Kieran Walshe, Director of Health and Care Research Wales, said:
“Our Senior Research Leaders are among the most prominent and prestigious health and care researchers in the country. We look to them to provide leadership and to act as ambassadors and advocates for health and care research.
“We are currently establishing a new Health and Care Research Wales Faculty, designed to provide expanded and more integrated opportunities for research career development. Our new Senior Research Leaders will play a central role in this new faculty.”
Professor Ronan Lyons OBE, Professor of Public Health at Swansea University, said: “I am honoured to be one of Health and Care Research Wales’ 14 Senior Research Leaders and I feel passionate about supporting and developing our next generation of researchers and continuing to champion Wales’ world-leading health care research.”
Professor Sinead Brophy, Professor of Public Health Data Science at Swansea University, said:
