Project Overview
Children of parents with depression are at risk of poor health and educational outcomes.
This study will explore the issue to examine the reasons for variation in mental health, general health and attainment outcomes in children of depressed parents.
We aim to link with two other studies:
• A longitudinal cohort, whereby 337 children and their parents are recruited from primary care as having a parent with major depressive disorder;
• A primary school network – HAPPEN, to examine the link between other health behaviours, self-reported wellbeing and depression.
We will create an e-cohort using linked routine data to examine the following research questions:
• What are the associations between maternal depression and a range of health, educational and mental health outcomes for children?
• What effect does the timing and chronicity of exposure to maternal depression have on children’s development (pre-natal and postnatal)?
