For more than a decade SAIL Databank has been helping governments, public bodies, the NHS and other organisations to unlock the full potential of their data; to reveal insights into their own data, thereby improving the lives of patients and the wider public.
“The need for such a resource has never been greater.” – Vaughan Gething…

SAIL Databank has been pivotal in positioning Wales as a world leader in the field of Population Data Science.
A valuable asset for Wales and the Welsh economy, SAIL Databank facilitates a multidisciplinary approach to developing, testing, evaluating and implementing public health interventions. Recognised as a Centre of Excellence within Swansea University and a world class enterprise that collaborates with other world leading institutions and researchers.
The trust and confidence that Welsh Government has in SAIL Databank been earned over the course of the last 12 years.
This has been achieved thanks to several key features of SAIL Databank. It’s time-tested data upload service that allows data controllers to stay in control of their data and set the parameters for its use in research. This reduces any data security risks and ensures a wide-reaching benefit to society when acted upon by government.
This robust process facilitates specific conditions to be place on the data when accessed by researchers. These controls are enforced and enhanced by our consumer panel, independent Information Governance Review Panel, Scientific Advisory Board and the SAIL Databank Management Group.
SAIL Databank’s ISO 27001 certified and UK Statistics Authority accredited environment navigates the rigorous legal and regulatory framework surrounding the use of person-based data. SAIL Databank reduces the risk to researchers associated with collecting, storing and analysing sensitive data.
A swift and streamlined two-stage application process to work with the data it holds, means that access SAIL Databank dramatically reduces the time it takes to traditionally access data of this scale.
The rich population data held within SAIL Databank and it’s adherence to strict governance protocols facilitates world-class, evidence-based research and policymaking that results in better strategic decisions and economically robust policies.
