The Population Data Science Summer Internship Programme culminated on Wednesday 27th August 2025, with a showcase event held in the Data Science Building at Swansea University.
This summer, we welcomed the largest-ever cohort of interns to our annual Summer Internship Programme. Over the past 12 weeks, our 20 interns have worked on various research, technical, methodological and development projects across our multidisciplinary teams within Population Data Science at Swansea University. Whilst working in world-leading teams, our interns have learned new skills and gained experience of using real-world data, systems and platforms, completing research and analysis, and undertaking development and technical activities.
The calibre of their work was evident at the showcase event, where each intern presented impactful projects on crosscutting themes and topics, ranging from data-driven insights into socio-economic and healthcare inequalities to understanding the risk of youth homelessness in Wales.
The event was attended by academics, researchers, colleagues from across Wales and the UK, representatives from the Welsh Government and members of the public.
Adele Battaglia, a member of the SAIL Consumer Panel and Judging Panel, said:
“The range of projects presented were of a very high standard and demonstrated the immense talent of the interns. I was blown away by the detail of how much work they had undertaken. The projects presented most certainly have the potential to guide future services/organisations.”
Professor Ashley Akbari, Population Data Science Summer Internship Programme Director, said,
“This year’s showcase was a great success, celebrating the amazing talent of our 2025 summer intern cohort. Their presentations offered valuable insight into the diverse and impactful work undertaken over the summer, spanning research, development, technical, and methodological approaches.
Feedback from our independent judging panel praised both the quality of the work and its potential to create meaningful impact. The programme continues to grow in scale and ambition, and this year’s cohort has once again raised the bar, delivering outstanding contributions that have enriched their respective projects and teams now and will continue to do so.
We are excited to build on this momentum by further developing and enhancing the internship programme. We look forward to welcoming applications from future interns eager to expand their expertise and experience as part of our internationally recognised Population Data Science group.”
This year’s internship programme was supported by ADR Wales (Administrative Data Research Wales), Secure Anonymised Information Linkage Databank (SAIL Databank), SeRP (Secure eResearch Platform), and Dementias Platform UK Data Portal (DPUK Data Portal).
